Chapter 21: Loretta

“You must be exhausted,” I tell Doc after learning that he drove for three days to get here.

He just shrugs, but I can see the heaviness in his eyes. The poor guy must be exhausted. He couldn’t have slept very long before getting up to come surprise me at the fight. When I walked to the tables, hugging everyone, I wouldn’t have stopped to see anyone if I had known he was patiently waiting for me to notice him. I’m not sure I would have even been able to fight if I had known he was in the crowd. I would have been too nervous about him watching and too excited to spend time with him. My mind would have gone to him instead of focusing on the fight.

The group comes to a stop in front of two vehicles. Edge holds the front door for Mina as the rest of the group start scrambling into the different vehicles. Damon and Ava climb into the backseat. Doc and I climb in the front seats. “Mario’s is off Main Street, right? In town?” Edge asks.

“Yes sir,” I tell him, “About a mile from the gym.”

Behind us Damon snickers, “Sir? What a suck up.”

It’s one of those moments I don’t have a great retort. That later, sometime tonight after I’ve gone to bed, I’ll think of some brilliant comeback.

Edge orders, “Loretta, tell me about your kid’s program.”

I pull out the same spill I always give, it’s quick and to the point. It’s during the questions, that I can personalize their answers. It’s called an elevator pitch, I learned about it during one of my business classes. It’s one of the things I found to be super effective, especially in situations like this, where I am completely caught off guard. “We work on teaching the kids self-discipline and respect, while helping give them a sense of self-confidence and accomplishment. Jiu-jitsu will help them physically and mentally. Strength doesn’t matter so much in jiu-jitsu, it’s all about the technique.”

Edge nods. “Sounds good to me. Respect. Kids need that these days. Sign Damon up for the classes.”

The car erupts into laughter. Damon grumbles something behind me, but he’s smiling. Ava whispers something in his ear. Mina says, “We are going to be at the Fall Festival tomorrow. Are you guys going?”

“We have a booth. I love that event. It’s my favorite.”

“Mine, too,” she smiles, “I love all of the vendors and the food.”

“That toffee hut or whatever it’s called.”

She nods enthusiastically, “That’s one of my favorites and the quesadilla place.”

“I haven’t ordered the quesadilla. I always order the nachos. They are so good.”

“Maybe we can find each other and split the order. I’ve always wanted to try the nachos, but I love the quesadilla.”

“I would love that,” I tell her.

Edge swears, “Break it up back there.”

I turn in my seat and see that Ava has practically crawled into Damon’s lap. Apparently, neither of them heard Edge because they don’t stop. Edge mutters, “Remind me to get a spray bottle,” before saying, “Doc, break it up.
